Cineplex Odeon Cinema Egyptien (Montreal, Quebec Canada - 1989)

The Cinema Egyptien is constructed beneath the Cour Mont Royal redevelopment, a conversion of an old hotel into a high-end retail mall and condominium tower. The cinema space was encumbered by a grid of closely spaced, five foot diameter concrete caissons which supported the building above.

The Egyptian theme was suggested by the resemblance of the spatial configuration to ancient Egyptian temple architecture. The motifs used include cast plaster column capitals, a 250 foot long mural completely encircling the lobby, and colours and forms taken from Egyptian architecture and decorative arts. The resulting atmosphere established the cinema as one of the unique entertainment venues in Montreal.
